Using the Scientific Method to hit the bullseye.

Professor Dr. Glenn J Martyna, CEO

Dr. Glenn J. Martyna received his Ph.D. from the Columbia University and subsequently became a NSF Postdoctoral Fellow in Computational Science and Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania. He was a tenured faculty member at Indiana University, Bloomington, before joining IBM Research and was later named an Honorary Professor of Physics at The University of Edinburgh, UK. He was an Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics Senior Fellow (IPAM) in Machine Learning for 2016. He is presently CEO of the startup company, Pimpernel Science, Software and Information Technology dedicated to designing new software and information technology from novel science.

Dr. Martyna’s interdisciplinary research is focused on the atomistic modeling of soft condensed matter and materials systems as well as novel device physics, in addition to his well-known work in physics-based computational methodology development. He is currently working to combine physical measurements with theory and machine learning to study and discover antimicrobial peptides, and to develop a new post-CMOS technology based on strain transductions that promises low power and high speed. New work involves combining neuroscience science, machine learning and novel models of thinking to approach cognition, in silico. .He has co-authored around 140 papers several of which are citations classics - papers with over 1000 citations. Dr. Martyna has over 17,000 citations, and an h-index about 50. He also has over 30 patents inspired by top flight scientific studies. A select number of his publications and patents are given on the site (see Google Scholar for a full list).

MY LATEST RESEARCH

Water is essential for life on this planet due to its unique properties - it has wide liquid range, a high critical point, and a temperature of maximum density that allows ice to float. It is enduring challenge to determine the essential physics underlying water's behavior. A novel electronically responsive  model has been constructed that moves the ball forward, describing water from ice to the super critical region.

We all love the convenience that the internet and the cloud affords. However, power is constraining progress. This is not solely caused by demand but by the present chip technology reaching its physical limits; power/area is no longer constant with chip generation! A new technology, the Piezoelectronic Transistor, based on my scientific research has been developed which promises to decrease power by 100x  as predicted by theory. Early experimental prototypes are promising.
